## How a Kitchen Countertop Project Runs

**Week 1, choose.** We meet on site, look at your cabinets and light, and narrow down material and colour. You can visit a slab yard for granite or quartzite, and we tag the slab you pick.

**Week 2, template.** Once cabinets are set, our crew brings the Proliner laser. It records every wall, corner and appliance opening to 1/16th inch. We mark seams, overhangs and cutouts with you and confirm the bracket schedule. Our

**Days 7-10, fabricate.** Your slab is nested to keep seams where planned, cut on CNC bridge saws and profiled on CNC. Backsplashes are cut from the same slab and book-matched.

**Install day.** Our Red Seal led crew removes the old top, sets and levels the new one, joins seams with colour-matched epoxy, installs undermount sink clips and reconnects plumbing. Read more on our

## Kitchen Details That Make or Break the Result

**Seams.** A seam should sit behind the range, at an inside corner or along the island edge. Never over a dishwasher or across a sink run. We put it in writing.

**Overhangs.** Seating overhangs past 10 inches get recessed steel. OBC Part 9 governs the house and its framing, not the stone on your cabinets, so the 10-inch bracket rule is our own, built from years of crack call-backs we were hired to fix. Skip it and the edge cracks the first time someone leans on it.

**Waterfall islands.** The vein should wrap the corner with no lip. That only happens on a CNC-machined 45-degree mitre. See our

**Cabinet level.** Your cabinets need to be within about 1/8 inch over 10 feet. We check at templating and shim where needed.

**Sink staging.** For undermount sinks, the actual sink must be on site at templating so the cutout matches the bowl, not a spec sheet.

## Kitchen Countertops for Condos, Flips and Builders

Downtown condo kitchens bring their own rules. In Yorkville and Liberty Village we book the freight elevator, size seams to the elevator cab and provide certificates to property management. Condo flippers turning 15-25 units a year use our trade accounts for consistent spec, trade pricing and a dedicated PM. ## Kitchen Countertop Care by Material

-   **Quartz:** soap and water. No bleach or oven cleaner. Trivets for hot pans.
-   **Granite:** reseal every 1-2 years when water darkens the stone.
-   **Marble:** wipe acids fast, reseal often, accept a soft patina.
-   **Porcelain:** almost maintenance-free; protect the edges from hard knocks.
-   **Butcher block:** oil monthly at first, then as it dries out.

## Kitchen Countertops FAQs

### What is the best countertop material for a Toronto kitchen?

For most busy Toronto kitchens, engineered quartz is the best all-round choice. It is non-porous, never needs sealing, resists wine and coffee stains and comes in consistent colours from Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone and Hanstone. It runs $65-$120/sqft installed for standard quartz and $110-$180/sqft for Caesarstone and Cambria.

The exceptions are worth knowing. If you cook with a lot of high heat or want an outdoor kitchen, large-format porcelain at $90-$150/sqft handles heat and UV better. If you want natural stone with one-of-a-kind patterning, granite at $70-$140/sqft is tougher with hot pans. Marble is beautiful in a kitchen but etches with lemon, wine and vinegar, so we usually suggest Calacatta-look quartz for the kitchen and real marble for a vanity. We price all of these side by side in one CAD quote so you can decide with numbers.

### How much do new kitchen countertops cost in Toronto?

A typical Toronto kitchen of 35-55 sqft costs roughly $2,275-$6,600 in standard quartz, $3,850-$9,900 in Caesarstone or Cambria, $3,150-$8,250 in Calacatta porcelain and $2,450-$7,700 in granite, all installed. Islands add 20-35 sqft. Our Leaside project, 48 sqft plus a 36-inch waterfall island and a full-height backsplash, was $11,400. Stone removal adds $150-$350; laminate removal is included.

### When should countertops be templated in a kitchen renovation?

Only after your cabinets are fully installed, levelled and fixed to the wall, your sinks and faucets are on site and your backsplash walls are finished. Templating any earlier is the most common cause of tops that do not fit. Builders sometimes push for early templating to save a few days; we decline, because a re-fit costs far more than the wait.

### How long will my kitchen be out of service?

Usually one day. On install day we remove the old top, set the new counter, epoxy the seams, reconnect the sink and leave the silicone to cure overnight. Most families are cooking again that evening. The full project from slab selection to install is 2-3 weeks.

### Can you install kitchen countertops in downtown condos?

Yes. In Yorkville, Liberty Village, King West and Humber Bay Shores we book the freight elevator, size slabs and seams to fit the elevator cab and send WSIB and $5M liability certificates to property management before install day.

### Do you do full-height backsplashes?

Yes. We cut full-height backsplashes from the same slab as the counter and book-match the veining so it flows up the wall. They are popular in quartz and Calacatta porcelain behind ranges. Outlets and switches are cut on our waterjet.

### What sink types can you cut for?

Undermount, drop-in, farmhouse apron-front and integrated quartz sinks. Undermount is the most popular with quartz; we support it with clips and epoxy and stage the sink before templating.

### Do you offer trade pricing for kitchen designers and condo flippers?

Yes. Trade accounts get volume pricing, the same spec across units and a dedicated PM. Omar F., who renovates 15-20 Toronto condos a year, uses us because the install dates hold.

### Can I keep my existing cabinets?

Usually, if they are sound and level within about 1/8 inch over 10 feet. We check at templating and shim where needed. Post-war kitchens in East York and Scarborough often reuse their cabinets.

### What overhang can a kitchen island have?

Up to 10 inches without extra support in quartz. Anything over 10 inches needs steel brackets recessed into the cabinet rail, and we write those into the quote.
