It hides etches, scratches and water marks far better, and it feels soft to the touch. We recommend it for most kitchens. **Polished** marble is glossy. Common Questions ## Marble Countertops FAQs ### Will marble etch in a kitchen? Yes. Marble is calcium carbonate, and acids like lemon juice, wine, tomato sauce and vinegar react with it and leave dull marks called etches. Sealing slows staining, but no sealer stops etching, because etching is a chemical reaction on the surface, not absorption. That does not mean marble cannot go in a kitchen. A honed finish hides etching far better than polished, and many owners like the soft patina that builds up over years. Statuario has a very white background with dramatic grey veining and sits at the premium end. ### Should I choose honed or polished marble? Honed marble has a matte finish that hides etches and scratches better and feels softer. Polished marble is glossy and shows the veining vividly, but etches stand out more.
