Kitchen Countertops Built Around Your Cabinets
Quartz countertops are the most common kitchen top we install in Toronto, from Leaside to Lawrence Park, but a kitchen is more than a slab choice. It is a sequence: cabinets, sink, appliances, template, fabricate, install. Get the order wrong and even a premium slab will not fit. Our whole process is built around one rule. We template only after your cabinets are installed and level, your sinks are on site and your backsplash walls are finished.
We compare all six materials we fabricate side by side: engineered quartz, granite, marble, porcelain, solid-surface and butcher block. On your first visit we bring a sample box with the top 20 Caesarstone, Cambria and Hanstone colours so you can see them against your own cabinets and light, not a showroom spotlight.
Which Kitchen Countertop Material Should You Choose?
Each material earns its place in a different kind of kitchen. Here is the honest version we give every client.
| Material | Best for | Watch out for | Installed per sqft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered quartz | Busy family kitchens, condos, rentals | Hot pans scorch resin; no outdoor use | $65 - $120 |
| Caesarstone / Cambria | Specific colours, jumbo islands, sample-matched slabs | Highest quartz tier | $110 - $180 |
| Calacatta porcelain | Range walls, heavy heat, outdoor kitchens | Thin body needs mitred edges | $90 - $150 |
| Granite | Natural stone with heat tolerance | Needs sealing every 1-2 years | $70 - $140 |
| Marble | Bakers, character, low-traffic kitchens | Etches with acids | Quoted per slab |
| Butcher block | Islands, coffee stations, warmth | Needs oiling, not for wet zones | Quoted from drawing |
Most of our Toronto kitchen clients end up with quartz on the perimeter. Some pair it with a contrasting island in Cambria or a porcelain range wall. Butcher block appears on islands and coffee bars through our custom countertops work.

Installed pricing covers templating, fabrication, an eased or quarter bullnose edge, one sink cutout, laminate removal and installation. Extras that commonly appear on a kitchen quote:
- Full-height backsplash, priced as additional square footage
- Waterfall legs, mitred on CNC
- Extra cutouts for cooktops, prep sinks and pop-up outlets
- Steel brackets for any overhang past 10 inches
- Stone removal at $150-$350
You pay 25% at templating, 50% when fabrication starts and the last 25% on install day after you walk the kitchen. More detail is on our quartz cost breakdown.
How a Kitchen Countertop Project Runs
Week 1, choose. We meet on site, look at your cabinets and light, and narrow down material and colour. You can visit a slab yard for granite or quartzite, and we tag the slab you pick.
Week 2, template. Once cabinets are set, our crew brings the Proliner laser. It records every wall, corner and appliance opening to 1/16th inch. We mark seams, overhangs and cutouts with you and confirm the bracket schedule. Our countertop templating page lists exactly what to have ready.
Days 7-10, fabricate. Your slab is nested to keep seams where planned, cut on CNC bridge saws and profiled on CNC. Backsplashes are cut from the same slab and book-matched.
Install day. Our Red Seal led crew removes the old top, sets and levels the new one, joins seams with colour-matched epoxy, installs undermount sink clips and reconnects plumbing. Read more on our countertop installation page.
Kitchen Details That Make or Break the Result
Seams. A seam should sit behind the range, at an inside corner or along the island edge. Never over a dishwasher or across a sink run. We put it in writing.
Overhangs. Seating overhangs past 10 inches get recessed steel. OBC Part 9 governs the house and its framing, not the stone on your cabinets, so the 10-inch bracket rule is our own, built from years of crack call-backs we were hired to fix. Skip it and the edge cracks the first time someone leans on it.
Waterfall islands. The vein should wrap the corner with no lip. That only happens on a CNC-machined 45-degree mitre. See our kitchen island countertops page.
Cabinet level. Your cabinets need to be within about 1/8 inch over 10 feet. We check at templating and shim where needed.
Sink staging. For undermount sinks, the actual sink must be on site at templating so the cutout matches the bowl, not a spec sheet.
Kitchen Countertops for Condos, Flips and Builders
Downtown condo kitchens bring their own rules. In Yorkville and Liberty Village we book the freight elevator, size seams to the elevator cab and provide certificates to property management. Condo flippers turning 15-25 units a year use our trade accounts for consistent spec, trade pricing and a dedicated PM. Builders and designers get the same, plus fab-only pricing of $42-$68/sqft on slabs they supply. Larger volume and restaurant work is covered on our commercial countertops page.
Kitchen Countertop Care by Material
- Quartz: soap and water. No bleach or oven cleaner. Trivets for hot pans.
- Granite: reseal every 1-2 years when water darkens the stone.
- Marble: wipe acids fast, reseal often, accept a soft patina.
- Porcelain: almost maintenance-free; protect the edges from hard knocks.
- Butcher block: oil monthly at first, then as it dries out.
