Quartzite Countertops in Toronto
Quartz countertops and quartzite countertops sound almost the same, and plenty of Toronto homeowners discover the difference only after a slab yard visit in Vaughan or Richmond Hill. Quartz is engineered. Quartzite is natural metamorphic sandstone, formed when sandstone is heated and compressed until its quartz grains fuse. The result is one of the hardest countertop stones you can buy, with veining no two slabs share.
We fabricate both in our 20,000 sqft Toronto shop, which means we can show you engineered quartz and natural quartzite side by side and fabricate whichever suits your kitchen. For quartzite, the first step is always the same: we test the slab before you pay for it.
Quartz vs Quartzite at a Glance
| Natural quartzite | Engineered quartz | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Metamorphic sandstone | 90-95% ground quartz + resin |
| Pattern | Unique per slab | Consistent per colour |
| Hardness | Harder than granite | Mohs about 7 |
| Sealing | Yes, about yearly | Never |
| Heat | Very good | Use trivets |
| Price | Quoted per slab | $65 - $180 / sqft installed |
Want consistent colour and zero maintenance? See quartz countertops. Want the most natural-looking stone with real hardness? Quartzite is a strong choice.
The Quartzite Mislabel Problem
Some stone sold as quartzite is actually soft quartzite, marble or dolomite. Those stones look similar in a yard but behave very differently in a kitchen. They etch with lemon and wine and scratch more easily. Before you commit to a slab, we run two simple tests:
- Glass scratch test. Real quartzite scratches glass. Marble and dolomite do not.
- Acid test. A drop of weak acid does nothing to true quartzite. On marble or dolomite it fizzes or leaves a dull etch mark.
If a slab fails, we tell you before you spend anything on it. If you love a stone that turns out to be marble, our marble countertops page explains how to live with it, or where to use it instead.
Types of Quartzite
- White quartzites. Bright backgrounds with soft grey or taupe movement, a natural alternative to Calacatta-look quartz.
- Warm quartzites. Creams, taupes and golds that pair well with warm oak and brass.
- Exotic quartzites. Greens, blues and dramatic veining for bars, islands and feature walls.
Quartzite Pricing
We quote quartzite per slab after selection, because prices vary widely by origin, colour and slab size. Most quartzite sits above our standard quartz tier. What drives the quote:
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Slab origin and rarity | Exotic colours cost more |
| Slab count | Long islands may need two slabs or careful nesting |
| Fabrication time | Hardness slows cutting and wears tooling |
| Waterfalls and mitres | CNC mitre time and vein matching |
| Edge profile | Mitred aprons cost more than eased edges |
If you buy the slab yourself, our fabrication-only rate is $42-$68/sqft. You pay 25% at templating, 50% at fabrication start and 25% on install day.
How We Fabricate Quartzite
Vein planning. After Proliner templating, we photograph your slab and lay the template over it on screen. You see where the movement runs and approve seam and waterfall placement.
Diamond tooling. Quartzite is harder than granite. Our stone fabricators run CNC bridge saws with diamond blades at slower feed rates to avoid chipping and heat build-up.
Mitres and seams. Waterfall mitres are machined on CNC so the vein wraps the corner. Seams are book-matched and placed behind the range or at an inside corner.
Sealing. We apply a penetrating sealer on install day.
Living With Quartzite
Clean with mild soap and water. Reseal about once a year, or when water starts to darken the stone. Use trivets for hot pans, not because quartzite cannot take heat, but because sudden temperature shocks stress any stone. True quartzite will not etch from kitchen acids.
