What Are Quartz Countertops?
Quartz countertops in Toronto are the default choice for most kitchen renovations we quote, from Yorkville condos to Willowdale family homes. Engineered quartz is about 90-95% ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed into slabs using a version of the Bretonstone vacuum process. The result is a dense, non-porous surface with a Mohs hardness of around 7. It shrugs off wine, coffee and turmeric, needs no sealing and comes in consistent colours that natural stone cannot promise.
We fabricate four engineered quartz brands: Caesarstone, Cambria, Hanstone and Silestone. We are an authorized fabricator for Caesarstone and Cambria since 2010. That status matters more than most buyers realize. Quartz is made in batches, and two slabs of the same colour from different batches can differ in tone or vein density. Because we order direct, we match the sample board you approve to the slab yardage we receive. That is how we avoid dye-lot drift, the single most common quartz complaint we hear from people who bought elsewhere.
Every slab is cut in our 20,000 sqft Toronto shop on CNC bridge saws and waterjet, with edges profiled on CNC. Nothing is subcontracted. A Red Seal fabrication lead reviews every piece before it leaves the shop.
Types of Quartz Countertops We Fabricate
Quartz is not one product. The four brands and their design tiers behave differently on your budget and in your kitchen.
- Standard engineered quartz. Solid whites, greys and light veined patterns from Hanstone and other quartz lines. This is the $65-$120/sqft tier and it covers most rental, condo and family kitchen work.
- Caesarstone. The brand our clients ask for by colour number: 5110 Alpine Mist, 5141 Frosty Carrina, 5131 Calacatta Nuvo and 1141 Pure White, which also carries NSF certification for food service. See our Caesarstone Toronto page for colour notes.
- Cambria. American-made quartz with bold veining and jumbo slabs that let many islands up to about 10-11 feet go seam-free. Cambria sits in the $110-$180/sqft tier with Caesarstone.
- Silestone by Cosentino. Uses the HybriQ+ formula with lower crystalline silica and recycled content. We source it through distribution and price it inside our published tiers by collection.
If you are still weighing quartz against a natural stone, our granite countertops and quartzite countertops pages explain where each one wins.
Quartz Countertop Cost Per Sqft in Toronto
We publish our per-sqft tiers before any deposit, and they are the same on every page of this site and in every GTA city we serve.
| Material tier | Installed per sq ft | 45 sqft kitchen |
|---|---|---|
| Standard engineered quartz | $65 - $120 | $2,925 - $5,400 |
| Caesarstone and Cambria | $110 - $180 | $4,950 - $8,100 |
| Large-format Calacatta porcelain | $90 - $150 | $4,050 - $6,750 |
| Natural granite | $70 - $140 | $3,150 - $6,300 |
| Customer-supplied slab (fab only) | $42 - $68 | $1,890 - $3,060 |
Installed pricing includes Proliner laser templating, CNC fabrication, an eased or quarter bullnose edge, one sink cutout, laminate removal and installation. Three numbers help you read any quartz quote in Toronto:
- Slab only is what a distributor charges for the raw material. It looks cheap until you add cutting, edging, transport and install.
- Fab only is our $42-$68/sqft rate when you supply the slab. It suits builders and designers with their own supply.
- Installed is the all-in number above, and the only one you can compare fairly between shops.
What moves your price inside a tier
| Factor | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Slab design | Plain whites sit at the low end; Calacatta and marble-look veining sit at the high end |
| Seams and slab count | Long islands or L-shapes may need a second slab or a jumbo slab |
| Cutouts | Extra sinks, cooktops and pop-up outlets add machining time |
| Edge upgrade | Mitred aprons, ogee and dupont are priced per linear foot |
| Backsplash | Full-height backsplashes add square footage and book-matching |
| Overhang support | Recessed steel brackets for any overhang past 10 inches |
| Removal | Laminate is included; stone removal is $150-$350 |

Deposit and Payment Schedule (25/50/25)
We never ask for a consultation fee or a large deposit up front. You pay in three stages, each one tied to work you can see:
- 25% at templating. Our Proliner crew has measured your installed cabinets and you have signed off on seams, overhangs and cutouts.
- 50% at fabrication start. Your tagged slab is on the CNC bridge saw.
- 25% on install day. Paid only after you walk the finished counter with us.
This matters because the most common horror story in Toronto countertop work is a 50% or larger deposit paid weeks before anyone measures anything. On our schedule, your money follows the work.
Quartz vs Granite vs Marble vs Porcelain
We fabricate all of these under one roof, so we have no reason to push one over another. Here is how they compare in a Toronto home.
| Engineered quartz | Granite | Marble | Porcelain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Installed price | $65 - $180/sqft | $70 - $140/sqft | Quoted per slab | $90 - $150/sqft |
| Sealing | Never | Every 1-2 years | Every 6-12 months | Never |
| Stain resistance | Excellent | Good once sealed | Fair, etches with acid | Excellent |
| Heat | Use trivets | Very good | Good | Excellent |
| UV and outdoors | Indoors only | Yes | Not advised | Yes |
| Look | Consistent, any colour | Unique natural pattern | Classic veining | Thin, large-format |
Quartz wins on everyday care and colour control. Granite wins on heat and outdoor use. Marble wins on character but asks for patience, which is why many Central Toronto clients put Calacatta-look quartz in the kitchen and real marble countertops in the powder room. Porcelain countertops are the answer for outdoor kitchens and range walls, where quartz resin would yellow or scorch.
When Do You Need New Quartz Countertops?
Most of our quartz work falls into four situations:
- Kitchen renovation. Cabinets are chosen or installed and you are now picking counters. This is the ideal time, because we template only after cabinets are set. Our kitchen countertops page covers the full renovation sequence.
- Laminate or tile replacement. The cabinets are sound and you want stone. We check level at templating and set quartz on your existing boxes, often in one day. See countertop replacement.
- Waterfall island or full-height backsplash. You want the vein to wrap corners. That needs CNC mitres, which our kitchen island countertops page explains.
- Commercial or volume work. Restaurants, clinics and condo flippers who need NSF 51 surfaces, consistent spec across units and after-hours install.
How We Prevent the Four Re-Fit Traps
Most failed quartz jobs in Toronto fail for one of four reasons, and all four are decided before the slab is cut.
Seam placement. Low-cost shops drop seams over the dishwasher or mid-sink to save slab yield. We place them behind the range or at the island edge and write them into a seam plan.
Overhang blow-out. Quartz cantilevered past 12 inches without support cracks. Anything over 10 inches gets steel brackets recessed into the cabinet rail before install.
Mitred lippage. Hand-cut 45-degree waterfall mitres leave a lip that catches dust. Ours are machined on a CNC profiler so the vein wraps cleanly.
Pre-cabinet templating. Templating before cabinets are set guarantees a bad fit. We only bring the Proliner once cabinets are installed, sinks are staged and backsplash walls are finished. Our countertop templating page explains what to have ready.
Quartz vs DIY or Big-Box Installation
Big-box stores sell quartz by the square foot and subcontract fabrication and install. That can work, but you lose control of three things: which slab arrives, who places the seams and how long the wait is. Michael G. in Scarborough paid $2,400 less with us than his big-box quote for a laminate-to-quartz swap done in one day. DIY quartz is not realistic. A 3cm slab weighs about 20 pounds per square foot, cutting it safely needs wet saws and dust control, and a single cracked corner wastes the slab.
Caring for Quartz Countertops
Daily care is simple: mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth. Skip bleach, oven cleaner, paint stripper and abrasive pads, which attack the resin. Use trivets under hot pots, because a sudden temperature spike can scorch or crack quartz. Use cutting boards. If you do chip an edge, our quartz chip repair service colour-matches resin on site, usually in under an hour.
